| China Restrictions for the Olympics |
The following message has been received from the International Vessel Operators Hazardous Materials Association: RE: Chinese Transportation and Production DG RestrictionsDue to security concerns regarding the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, the Chinese Government halted production within China of 257 Dangerous Chemicals (primarily Explosives, Flammables, and Toxics) from 5/1-5/17. In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Transportation has also embargoed the transport of these materials from certain cities, ports, terminals, and airports from 5/20-5/24 and 7/1-8/24. During these periods, all hazardous materials transport permits will be suspended. Although no official notice has been issued or received to date, US DOT PHMSA is actively pursuing clarification and possible relief through the Chinese Ministry of Transportation and the US Commerce Department. It has also been reported that the transportation and production restrictions are aimed at eliminating pollution at Olympic venues. Admiral Barrett, US DOT deputy secretary, is headed to China on Saturday May 17th. This will be one of the issues he is scheduled to address |
